Welcome to the Texas State Junior Classical League!
Bringing Texans interested in the classics together since the late 60s, the TSJCL fosters the study of ancient Greek and Latin topics in the modern age. The TSJCL is one of more than 1,000 chapters of the National Junior Classical League, an international organization that encourages the same activities as the TSJCL. The NJCL is one of the largest student driven organizations in the world, comprised of more than 45,000 students.
We invite you to browse our website whether you are a member of the TSJCL or not. We have many resources available for others studying the Classics.

TSJCL Announcement COVID-19 Virus
Dear TSJCL Sponsors,
Out of abundance of caution and with the declaration of health emergency by Houston’s Mayor Turner, the State Chairs have concluded that cancelling the 2020 TSJCL Convention due to the concerns of COVID-19 would be the best course of action.
We recognize all the hard work that students and teachers have put into preparing for this event and share in their disappointment in the cancellation. The decision to cancel this event was not made lightly. The state chairs have been in constant communication and discussion since last week and have been monitoring the situation carefully. As the press conference by the mayor of Houston unfolded today, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of students, teachers, chaperones, and the TSJCL as an organization. Please know that if payments have already been made or submitted, TSJCL is prepared to refund all costs associated with the convention (registration, food, etc.), except for the processing fee assessed by Stripe if payment was made by using the online credit card option. The fee is assessed by Stripe, NOT TSJCL, and cannot be recovered by the organization. We apologize for this inconvenience.
We want to take this time to recognize all the hard work put in by this year’s TSJCL student officers in the organization of this event. The amount of time they spent and the dedication they have for TSJCL and the Classics are second to none. They should be applauded for all that they have done, even though we had to make the painful decision to cancel this year’s state convention.
The State Chairs are also discussing if and how any contests may take place but have made no final decisions at this time. Additionally, the State Chairs in conjunction with the Board will come up with a plan for student officer and State Chair elections to take place so that a new board will be in place. We will disseminate additional information via all TSJCL social media outlets and the TCA Listserv as soon as possible.

TSJCL Announcement re: JCL Creed & Song
Dear TSJCL Sponsors,
Many of you may be aware of the social media concerns surrounding the JCL. If not, in brief, observers (some of whom are JCL sponsors, and others of whom are not) have objected to some of the language used in the NJCL song and creed. Because the creed and song are part of the NJCL Handbook which requires a vote of the NJCL Board, NJCL is NOT able to make immediate changes.
As the chairs of a state affiliate of NJCL, TSJCL State Chairs have decided that the creed and the song are not mandatory at TSJCL events. Furthermore, we encourage local JCL sponsors to refrain from using the NJCL song and creed until our national organization has had the opportunity to evaluate and assess the creed and song fairly and objectively under the guidance of the diversity consultant hired by ACL. Until TSJCL receives further guidance from NJCL, the song and the creed will no longer be available on the TSJCL website.
In addition, one of the activities NJCL offered in the past during the Day in Old Rome was Rent-A-Roman. NJCL recognized the resemblance of this activity to Roman slave auctions and has not offered this activity for a long time. NJCL has unequivocally stated that the national organization condemns any actions, reenactments, and/or activities that advocate slavery or any form of human rights violation. Even though TSJCL State Conventions have not offered this event, the TSJCL State Chairs want to echo the same sentiment as the NJCL and strongly discourage local sponsors from having these events.
